The ending was a little confusing, but if you saw the movie you'd probably be surprised if it wasn't confusing. Now for the context. ![]() No one's first film is great or even good, but this was a very good first effort from the writer-director and I think it showed a great natural artistic capability that a longer career would have honed. I was amazed at how good this was for a first film and it's tragic to think there will never be another movie from this clearly gifted artist. That being said, if I didn't know the backstory behind the film, I probably wouldn't have sought it out, let alone even heard of it, and it's better to judge a film on its own rather than the context around its making. I acknowledge that I had a bias going into this movie as I went in knowing the tragic story of the writer-director, but the bias should not be judged too harshly as I've gone into many movies wanting them to be good and that's never stopped me from judging them to be bad if they were indeed bad. While The Evil Within is not great, it's certainly memorable. 6/10 might not sound like a good rating, but I prefer a 4-star scale, with 2 stars being average, not bad but not exactly memorable, and 3 stars being good, and this movie's in between, so my rating is 2.5/4 stars. A not exactly good but certainly memorable movie, and an incredible first and only film from an untapped talent.

(Taro Karibe/Getty Images) In 2007, Ryan Gosling played a character who has trouble making friends or even socializing with people in a movie called “Lars and the Real Girl.” In the movie, to salve his social anxieties, he turns to the company of a silicone doll he names Bianca. His friends, family and community decide to support him. Eventually, Lars learns to get past his insecurities and begins a relationship with a real woman. Although this was fiction, it is not as far-fetched as it might seem. In fact, at least one man in Japan is playing out a somewhat similar story. At first, 61-year-old Senji Nakajima’s interest in his love doll, named “Saori,” was purely to fill feelings of loneliness. But after a few months of living with her in his Tokyo apartment, Nakajima, (who is married and has two children but lives away from home because of work) started to think that the doll had developed her own personality. She became more than an inanimate object to him; he began to think of her as his girlfriend. Of Saori, Nakajima said, “She never betrays I’m tired of modern rational humans. They are heartlessfor me, she is more than a dollShe needs much help, but still is my perfect partner who shares precious moments with me and enriches my life.” Getty Images photographer Taro Karibe, much of whose work is propelled by a desire to examine humanity’s sometimes fragile identity, decided to tag along with Nakajima and Saori to see what life living with a silicone doll looks like. These photos show what he found out. Jennifer Lopez – “Amor, Amor, Amor” ft. Wisin This dual effort by Jennifer Lopez and Wisin marks another upbeat, high-tempo Spanish song released to U.S. Audiences in hopes of reaching “Despacito” popularity. The song conjures images of fast dances and celebratory festivals. It begins with Lopez erotically and explicilty singing about the intimate passion she shares with her lover. Yet, this is no different from “Despacito,” in which monolingual listeners can enjoy and ignore the actual meaning of the song, in favor of the desire to dance that “Amor, Amor, Amor” imparts. Wisin joins throughout the song for faster lyrics approaching a sing-rap. His lyrics represent the other side of the sexual desire that Jennifer Lopez has been describing. The sexually explicit meaning does not detract from the song in any way, as “Amor, Amor, Amor” remains a fun song to sing along and dance to, even if you don’t know what you’re saying. Kim Petras – “Slow It Down” “Slow It Down” begins with a melody of washed-out electronic beats, followed closely by the clear and crisp vocals of Petras. The chorus of the song combines reverb, heavy bass, electronics, and repeating backing vocals, creating an almost overwhelming wall of sound. The best way to describe “Slow It Down” is by comparing it to the single artwork. It features a simplistic neon version of Petras, surrounded by blackness. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Polaris sleds offer terrain dominating control, so you can ride with confidence in any landscape. During the Berlinale press conference dedicated to the film Raoul Peck was asked if he read Karl Marx. He answered that he attended seminars dedicated to Marx's Capital. His film is reminiscent of such a seminar; interminable and tedious. There are many dialogues, questions, answers however the film completely lacks artistic vision. There is no interesting music, camera-work or a gripping plot. Raoul Peck tried to underline the more materialistic side of his relationship with Jenny, showing his sex life and child birth. To deprive Marx of certain romanticism is also not fair, the young philosopher was a romantic of his own kind; he was engaged for seven years to Jenny and dedicated many poems to her. The discussions depicted in the film are too primitive for such great thinkers such as Marx, Engels, Proudhon and Bakunin. The proletariat, on the other hand, is shown as a group of people with abject faces and feeble children, which makes the ideas of Marx about the proletariat too idealistic and not connected to reality. One of the positive sides of the picture is that Peck did not try to distort facts about the people in the film, however after the film finishes one feels relieved that the drawn-out seminar on Karl Marx is finally over. Bouc, a fellow Belgian who is a director of the train line and is also boarding the train. After boarding, Poirot is approached by Samuel Ratchett, a malevolent, elderly American. Ratchett believes his life is being threatened and attempts to hire Poirot but, due to his distaste, Poirot refuses. On the second night of the journey, as he is only travelling to, M. Bouc gives up his first class-compartment to Poirot, who is going to. This gives Poirot the compartment next to Ratchett. ![]() ![]() The train is stopped by a snowdrift near (spelled Vincovci in the book). Several events disturb Poirot's sleep, including a cry emanating from Ratchett's compartment. The next morning, M. Bouc informs him that Ratchett has been murdered and asks Poirot to investigate. After Poirot and Dr. Constantine examine Ratchett's compartment, Poirot finds a note with the words '-member little Daisy Armstrong' on it, which causes him to ascertain Ratchett's real identity. A few years before, three-year-old heiress Daisy Armstrong was kidnapped by a man named Lanfranco Cassetti, who collected a ransom and killed the child. Cassetti was caught but fled the country after he was acquitted on a technicality. Poirot concludes that Ratchett was Cassetti. Poirot discovers that everyone in the coach had a connection to the Armstrong family and a motive to kill Cassetti. He proposes two possible solutions. The first solution is that a stranger boarded the train and murdered Cassetti. The second one is that all of the passengers conspired to murder Cassetti. Hubbard, revealed to be the famous actress Linda Arden, Daisy Armstrong's grandmother, confesses that the second solution is the correct one. Constantine choose to present the first theory to the Yugoslavian police. Reception [ ] The of 11 January 1934 outlined the plot and concluded that 'The little grey cells solve once more the seemingly insoluble. Christie makes an improbable tale very real, and keeps her readers enthralled and guessing to the end.' In of 4 March 1934, Isaac Anderson wrote, 'The great Belgian detective's guesses are more than shrewd; they are positively miraculous. Although both the murder plot and the solution verge upon the impossible, Agatha Christie has contrived to make them appear quite convincing for the time being, and what more than that can a mystery addict desire?' The reviewer in of 12 January 1934 noted that the murder would have been 'perfect' (i.e., a ) had Poirot not been on the train and also overheard a conversation between Miss Debenham and Colonel Arbuthnot before he boarded; however, 'The 'little grey cells' worked admirably, and the solution surprised their owner as much as it may well surprise the reader, for the secret is well kept and the manner of the telling is in Mrs. Christie's usual admirable manner.' : 'The best of the railway stories. He's got the brawn, and the baritone-like timbre, to sing the heavier and roles, but it's impressive to hear how well this generally lighter, French fare fits his voice. There's plenty of requisite muscle in 's 'Flower Song' (from ), but he floats the final B-flat in a creamy pianissimo, which, sadly, is rarely attempted these days. In a role like 's Werther, which Kaufmann practically owns today, one hears all the stifled rage and anguished release in a single phrase, ending on a velvety mezza voce. Also known as: Shuttle Life Year: 2017 Genres: Drama Countries: Malaysia Rating: 7.7 Cast: Jack Tan; Sylvia Chang; Angel Chan; Mei Yan Gan; Juztin Lan; Jack Yap Storyline: Ah Qiang lives in the big city and struggles to take care of his mentally unstable mother and his 5-year-old sister, Hui Shan. When a speeding car kills Hui Shan in an accident, Ah Qiang is desperate to claim his sister's body. Unfortunately, he can't prove his relation with Hui as she was never registered at birth. Ah Qiang's mother is no help given her condition. Ah Qiang is forced to face this predicament on his own. The water crisis is just one problem Qiang faces every day living in a low-income apartment block with his mentally ill mother (Chang) and his beloved little sister Hui Shan (a maturely mischievous Angel Chan). Back home, Mom is obsessing about washing clothes that are not dirty. She’s a seamstress living in a remote world of her own, and the tenderness of Qiang and Hui Shan as they try to coax her into taking her medicine is a touching intro to their extremely difficult but caring family life. As if things weren’t dramatic enough, on his sister's sixth birthday, Qiang and his buddies, who live on the edge of the law working at odd jobs and stealing car parts, take her motorcycle riding. After an accident, Qiang wakes up in the hospital. There is no sign of Hui Shan, who seems to have vanished into thin air. The rest of the film is a merciless trip through hell, and young Tan makes the audience part of his anguished, hopeless odyssey searching for Hui Shan while he tries to control his hair-trigger emotions and keep his mother safely at home. He wages an uphill battle against bureaucracy at the hospital, drug store and police station, where his poverty and lack of influence translate into helplessness. Tan Seng Kiat holds the directing reins rock-steady, never compromising on the stressful horror of the boy’s situation. Only a few scenes appear tacked on, like the bulldozing of a shanty town that has no narrative connection to the story, and the glaringly obvious class gap when Qiang and his pals are taken to a swanky rich man's party. For a story that works best when it's most believable, these late scenes of class resentment feel pushed way too far. ![]() |
