I try to steer clear of movie reviews, especially projections but as this one comes out of my home state and given the subject matter, I feel the need to get a few things off my chest about this movie Per Masslive: “Based on a script by Andrew Loga, the film recounts the 1969 car accident, where U.S. Kennedy drove off a Martha’s Vineyard bridge, leaving his passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, to drown in a pond. Kennedy left the scene of the accident, returned home and failed to report the accident for nine hours.” Okay so for those of you not from the area, not alive during the 1980s election, or the incident in question, let me give you a little background The Chappaquiddick incident was a single-vehicle car accident on on July 18, 1969. The incident involved. His 28-year-old companion,, reportedly drowned, although the testimony of a diver would indicate suffocation instead. ![]() According to his own testimony, Kennedy accidentally drove his car off a one-lane bridge and into a tidal channel before swimming free, leaving the scene, and not reporting the accident for nine hours. Meanwhile, Kopechne had died in the car through drowning or suffocation. The next day, Kopechne’s body and the car were both recovered by divers. Kennedy pleaded guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of a crash after causing injury and later received a two-month suspended jail sentence. The Chappaquiddick incident became a national scandal of the 1970s. I should also note that it completely derailed any hopes he ever had about running for president. Okay, I’ve seen a lot of hyperbole thrown back and forth. ![]() ![]() Dec 21, 2017 - Sheryl Oh December 21, 2017. One of Hollywood's more under-the-radar leading men, Jason Clarke, stars as US Senator Ted Kennedy in Chappaquiddick, a biopic hoping to crack open the scandal that irreparably changed Kennedy's. 'Chappaquiddick' Official Trailer (2018)| Jason Clarke, Kate Mara. Chappaquiddick is a 2017 American drama film directed by John Curran and written by Taylor Allen and Andrew Logan. The film stars Jason Clarke, Kate Mara, Ed Helms, Bruce Dern, Jim Gaffigan, and Taylor Nichols. It was screened in the Gala Presentations section at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. There’s a lot of speak about Ted Kennedy straight up murdering her, Mary Jo committing suicide, a family cover up, etc. The list goes on. What we know: Kennedy didn’t report the incident for 9 hours. Forensic analysts concluded that Mary Jo died of asphyxiation, not drowning and possibly could have been rescued. Kennedy got off with a slap on the wrist. Say what you will, but I don’t think anyone not of millionaire descent would have gotten off with a 2 month suspended sentence. Before we go any further, I have to confess my own personal bias here. I was never a fan of Kennedy. I didn’t like him at all. People say he did great things for our state well what? For years after he died, our infrastructure was on the verge of collapse, we’re still paying off the Big Dig, our transit system was 50 years out of date, and Cape Wind failed which he claimed he was opposed to for enviornmental reasons but I’m sure the fact that he had a house right next to where the windmills were supposed to be built didn’t factor in at all, right? Not to mention the fact that not long after his death, stories of our state reneging on it’s due to lack of funding began to circulate while we somehow had $38 million to pay for a shrine for him that his family could have easily foot the bill for. But I don’t really want to sound TOO MUCH like a pundit, so I’m going to move on Lets see what do we have for a plot? On the eve of the moon landing, Senator Kennedy becomes entangled in a tragic car accident that results in the death of former Robert Kennedy campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne. The senator struggles to follow his own moral compass and simultaneously protect his family’s legacy, all while simply trying to keep his own political ambitions alive. Kay Who’s directing this? I’m getting two different names here the first is John Curran who’s known for Apparently nothing I’m familiar with. The other name Oh God! The guy who directed the theatrical bomb based on one of the most repulsively unreadable works of dribble ever to hit the shelves is tackling this!!?? Well based on all that, we’re going to be seeing some serious revisionist history here folks be very afraid Honestly this whole thing seems to meant to appease the cult-like following Ted Kennedy has that has been dismissive of the incident as a non-issue. Okay, let’s put all of that aside and look at what we know from a ‘by the numbers’ standpoint. “Will this movie be any good?” Well honestly it’s hard to say. What little info is available on it is that it’s a fairly low budget film, which isn’t saying much. Most of the best movies out there had a tight budget. The is recognizable at best, there is talent there, but no real household names to speak of. This wouldn’t be an issue except that I’m familiar with most of the leading cast and none of them have ever really stood out enough to justify a leading role. The choice of director eh well I only know him from 50 shades and given how much I hate the book, I wasn’t in attendance for the film, so I’ll give him a little benefit of the doubt? No you won’t! Okay, you’re probably right about that. Will it bomb? Low budget indie films rarely do. I can’t see anyone taking too big a loss on this. I do however have a hard time with who the demographic is supposed to be. The people who remember this incident aren’t really the big movie-going audience, and again, based on the revisionist nature of the plot we’ve seen thus far, I don’t see very many people outside of hard left democrats and Ted Kennedy fanboys enjoying this. Should we take it seriously? This movie is listed as a Thiller/Drama. If we’re speaking as to whether or not it’s historically accurate? Again, based on the plot, this seems like more conjecture and biased opinion than actual facts of the case. Note that most of the little bit of plot we have focuses more on supposed inner struggles that Ted Kennedy may have faced. Will you see it? As an avid history lover, attempts at revisionist history tend to annoy me greatly. (See for more info) Then why bother talking about it? Honestly, normally I wouldn’t have, but this is about something out of my area. I live and have lived in a climate where people have tried to make this man this ‘Liberal Lion’ a God amongst men. Heck, we’ve even seen him appear on kids TV shows because that’s who you’d want as a role model Okay, okay, I’m off topic so I’m going to stop now. Basically, I decided to tackle this one because Historical Fantasy is my bread and butter, and minus any mystical creatures, that’s pretty much what this is. It could have perhaps been saved had the directorgone for realism. For instance, in 1969, no small town Aussie kid spoke as if they werestraight out of a preppie school in Britain. I might have forgiven thismassive oversight if perhaps the parents of the said children were allOxford professors but no, Toni Collette knew how to be her Australianbest as did every other adult in the film, but somehow the kids, including the young Indigenous man, flopped into this small pint pot ofa place with plums in their gobs. This set me on edge immediately. Getit real or forget it.Too uneven to be enjoyable. The opening scenes are wonderfully iconicof country Australia in the era but that's where the realism ends. All important topics utterly wasted: The effects of racism, incest, teen suicide, parents betraying their children and behaving badly.this could seriously have been a brilliant piece but I'll forget it assoon as I've finished this review. Not entirely, anyway. When they announced the launch of a new trilogy a few years ago with 'The Force Awakens,' it was clear the series needed an infusion of fresh blood, but it also needed its crowd-pleasing tropes and traditions, its foundational stars and mythologies. No less than Abrams, Johnson is a pop savant steeped in 'Star Wars' arcana, and you can sense his reverence for the legacy with which he's been entrusted. As in 'The Force Awakens,' there are sequences here that duly recall some of the original trilogy's most memorable moments, from a one-on-one Jedi training session to an advance by an army of new-and-improved AT-AT walkers. ![]() But this time the nods feel less like obligatory acts of fan service than mythological reverberations, signaling a deeper, more intricate narrative intelligence at work. It begins with a typically noisy and dazzling space battle, this one pitting the ominously hovering ships of the evil supreme leader Snoke (played with characteristic motion-capture mastery by Andy Serkis) against the Resistance's scrappy fighters. Even amid the ensuing laser-light spectacular, Johnson quickly gives the proceedings a human pulse, sending the dashing pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) into the fray and integrating a high-stakes suspense sequence that sets a crucial subplot in motion. The most compelling of the movie's three interwoven plotlines is the one that picks up where 'The Force Awakens' left off, with Rey (Daisy Ridley), a desert scavenger and possible heir to the long-dormant Jedi mantle, arriving on a remote island and coming face-to-face with the elusive Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Luke, haunted by personal demons, has no intention of coming out of hiding, and his stubbornness establishes an immediately engaging dynamic between the eager young upstart and her reluctant mentor. Hamill's career may never have fully escaped Luke's long shadow, but somewhere along the way he morphed into a pretty terrific character actor, as evidenced by his sly performance in this year's indie charmer 'Brigsby Bear.' In 'The Last Jedi,' he doesn't just rock a hoodie and a goatee; his role as a grizzled, avuncular presence suits him better than earnest leading-man status ever did. To a degree that even Fisher and Harrison Ford couldn't fully manage in 'The Force Awakens,' Hamill's unexpected gravitas, offset by a faint twinkle of humor, acts as a kind of veteran's seal of approval, setting the tone for fine performances across the board. It's one of the vagaries of big-budget franchise filmmaking, of course, that characters and story decisions you may have resisted in the first installment have a way of wearing you down by the second. If 'The Force Awakens' had the tough but rewarding task of winning us over to its new cast, 'The Last Jedi' rightly assumes from the outset that we are already invested in what happens to Rey, Finn and Poe — and, yes, Kylo Ren, whom Driver plays with unnerving tremors of anguish, ambiguity and cruel resolve. Among the movie's more indelible achievements is the psychological triangle that develops among Rey, Kylo Ren and his uncle Luke, who are bound by their shared histories and uncertain destinies, and also by weird disruptions within the Force. As Kylo Ren's malevolent mentor, Serkis also makes a more impressive villain this time around, especially since we now see him in the (hideously misshapen) flesh. That's a lot scarier than his fuzzy hologram in 'The Force Awakens,' when he was basically secondhand Snoke. Those who have seen Johnson's mind-bending time-travel thriller 'Looper' (2012) — or, for that matter, his insouciantly clever crime capers 'Brick' (2005) and 'The Brothers Bloom' (2008) — know the director takes an old-school delight in pulling the rug out from under his audience. Even nostalgia goes down better when it's laced with a healthy dose of the unexpected, and while it hardly skimps on callbacks and fan favorites, 'The Last Jedi' has a flowing moment-to-moment unpredictability that rises, on occasion, to genuinely thrilling peaks of surprise. All of which is to say that Johnson, for all his idiosyncrasies as a storyteller, hasn't gone so far as to refashion 'Star Wars' in his own indie-auteur image. (As Lucasfilm's unfortunate director-retention rate of late suggests, the company doesn't exactly smile on filmmakers who think too far out of the box.) But Johnson has pulled off something no less difficult: Working under the heaviest possible scrutiny, he has succeeded in branding a potentially anonymous corporate product with his own distinct signature. And he has done so with the assistance of some invaluable past collaborators, including editor Bob Ducsay and cinematographer Steve Yedlin, who shot the picture on crystalline 35-millimeter film. In that respect, the wise decision to cast Ridley, Boyega and Isaac in 'The Force Awakens' — dismissed as a sop to gender and ethnic quotas in some particularly noxious corners of the 'Star Wars' fan-verse — pays off with even richer dividends here. It isn't just that their characters have grown in emotional stature, but that they feel like living, breathing embodiments of a stirring new franchise ethos. You might argue that there's something calculated about the movie's rousing 'You go, girl!' Sentiments and pointed displays of non-white-male heroism, and you wouldn't necessarily be wrong. ![]() ![]() ![]() Dec 15, 2017 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' made $104.7 million on Friday, making it the second highest opening day of all time. This is the cover of Dark Empire, Dark Horse's simultaneously awesome and ridiculous Star Wars sequel comic Dark Horse After the success of ' ' and ',' it's hard to imagine ' ' would become one of the most divisive films in the franchise. Yet, here we are. The film has been in theaters for barely than a week and and 're-make Episode VIII properly.' Even the petition's creator admits the demand is patently ridiculous, though its absurdity lies not in the petition itself, but in its justification -- that 'The Last Jedi' needs to be culled from the Star Wars timeline because it doesn't live up to the expectations of fans of the comics and novels that make up the (EU). I grew up reading those books too. They were pulpy, ridiculous fun, but that doesn't mean they were good. In fact, a lot of the Star Wars EU was really, really bad. Here are some our favorite terrible stories from the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Remember that time Luke fell in love with a dead woman? In the novel ' Luke gets trapped on an Imperial Dreadnaught, where the spirit of a long-dead Jedi living in the ship's computer helps him open doors and hide from his attackers. Luke falls in love with the possessed spaceship computer and eventually starts dating her after she transfers her consciousness into the body of one of Skywalker's dying students. By comparison, Han and Leia's romance was pretty straightforward: Boy rescues girl, girl calls boy a nerfherder, boy gets frozen in carbonite, girl rescues boy. You know, a classic love story. How about when Emperor Palpatine cloned himself dozens of times? Luke's girlfriend isn't the only Jedi who made a habit of leaping from body to body. In the ' comics, Darth Vader's final sacrifice was rendered moot when it was revealed the Emperor had a stronghold of cloned bodies to transfer his soul into after the destruction of the second Death Star. Oh, and Luke was so impressed by Emperor Palpatine's immortality he turned to the dark side for a while. What about the endless march of Death Star clones? Did I mention both of the above stories revolve around Death Star-like super weapons? The EU is littered with planet-killer wannabes. There's Centerpoint Station's planet (and star) destroying, the particle disintegrator warheads fired from the planet killing, the Mass Shadow Generator's ability to crack a planet's crust through and the invincible, solar system destroying. There's dozens more, too -- and that's not even counting weapons like the Darksaber or Conqueror, which just cram onto other spaceships. And you thought 'The Force Awakens' Starkiller Base was uncreative. Speaking of the Death Star, did you know it was secretly a sentient bounty hunter droid? In 'Empire Strikes Back,' Darth Vader hires bounty hunters to track down the Millennium Falcon, and says he wants the Rebels alive, famously telling Boba Fett: 'No disintegration.' Star Wars Expanded Universe novels were almost always fun, but they weren't always great. Bantam Books Next to Fett is a weird-looking droid named IG-88. This accidentally sentient bounty hunter droid is actually kind of cool. Here's what isn't: his side story in the short story collection 'Tales of the Bounty Hunters' that portrays him in a two-bit ploy to take over the galaxy. Giving the Death Star a personality doesn't make it better. Let's all just be thankful that Lando blew it up at the end of 'Return of the Jedi,' killing this storyline forever. Did you know someone grew a clone from Luke's severed hand? That's right. Luke's hand didn't just fall down a random shaft in the bowels of Cloud City, it was recovered by Darth Vader and eventually used to create an evil clone. No, that's not a typo. There was that one time Luke's girlfriend had to kill him so she could date him. No, not the dead force-ghost girlfriend who possessed one of his students, but Mara Jade -- the one, but who accidentally fell in love him with instead. She compromised and satisfied her Skywalker bloodlust by killing off Luuke instead. That's what he gets for spelling his name wrong, I guess. Remember Skippy, the force-sensitive droid? Ever wonder why the little red R5 droid Uncle Owen almost bought in 'A New Hope' malfunctioned just in time for him to buy R2-D2 instead? Neither did anybody else, but if you really want to know, read issue 1 of the comic 'Star Wars Tales.' Spoiler alert: It was a. Named Skippy. (OK, I actually love that last story, but it's terrible.) But what about the good EU stories? It's true -- not all of the stories in the EU are terrible. The truth about Star Wars is that it is, always has been, and always will be a mess. For decades it has entertained us with stories spanning from epic and inspiring to embarrassingly cheesy. It's told those stories through films, comics, novels, video games and theme park rides. Most of those stories haven't been good. A few have been great. You don't need any reason to You don't have to like how it portrayed Luke Skywalker in his old age or how it decided to wrap up (or outright dismiss) the mysteries left over from 'The Force Awakens.' The film is inspired by the true story of Ivan Mishukov, who walked out of his Moscow apartment at the age of four and spent two years living on the city streets where he was adopted by a pack of wild dogs. In the recession-ravaged city, Ivan’s human world was dominated by deprivation and violence; his only hope was to turn to feral dogs for company, protection and warmth. Kotting’s spellbinding and utterly original story of survival conjures the streets of Moscow in the 1990s through the eyes of a child, drawing on a range of innovative modes and techniques to produce a montage essay on the state of the world. ![]() ![]() Award winning artist and filmmaker Andrew Kotting adapts Hattie Naylor's curriculum, award-winning play, Ivan and the Dogs, for cinema. Kabocha has a dull-finished, deep green skin with an intense yellow-orange flesh. It has a sweet taste, even sweeter than butternut squash, while the texture and flavor is a cross between a pumpkin and a sweet potato. ![]() Japanese love eating kabocha squash for its many health benefits. It’s high in beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamins B1 and B2, and more. Beta-carotene can be converted to vitamin A in the body and vitamin A is important for healthy white blood cells, good immunity and for vibrant eyes, skin and hair. It’s really good stuff! Whenever kabocha squash is in season, I will rush to the farmers market to pick up one or two to make some of my favorite fall recipes. A typical kabocha squash salad includes kabocha, sliced cucumbers, and raisins and that’s how my mom used to make. Sometimes kabocha salad also includes diced onion. Since my husband is not a huge fan of raisins, I replaced raisins with bacon instead. I love the salty flavor of the bacon in the naturally sweet kabocha. The crispy bits of bacon definitely adds another dimension to the typical kabocha salad. You can definitely leave it out for vegetarian version. To prepare this salad, the squash is boiled until soft; it is then mashed (some chunks are good) before combining with cucumber slices, bacon (if added) and seasoned with Japanese mayo, salt and freshly ground pepper. Very simple, yet utterly flavorful. The slightly creamy and sweet flavor of this Kabocha Squash Salad make it equally fitting to serve as a side dish for your holiday dinner. Just a word of caution: Kabocha squash has a really hard skin. It requires a razor-sharp knife and a strong force to cut it open. So just be extra careful when you cut the squash. Nami, I have never made a recipe with Kabocha squash before – let alone made a salad with it. But I have seen many delicious looking recipes with it and I plan to look for it at the fruitmonger this week, I am not sure that we can find it easily around here but I will try as this recipe looks very tempting and I am eager to try it out and see how it tastes like. The color is wonderful and very appetizing. Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe, dear friend! Hope you had a great Halloween with the kids! Take good care of yourself! I hope you had a wonderful Halloween with the kids. It was pretty wet here, but bad weather sure doesn’t bother kids on a quest for candy! ? I’ve never tried a kabocha. I’m sure I would love it!!! I pretty much love any kind of squash. I’ve not thought of making one into a salad though. I’ve had it as a topping on a salad, but not as the main ingredient. It’s a great idea. Unfortunately I can’t get the kids to touch squash which surprises me. You think they would like a sweeter taste. Still, I know I would really enjoy this. ? Happy fall to you. What it's about: Lafras Verwey has been a clerk in the civil service for 30 years. By day, he sorts files and whiles away the mundane hours writing grandiose propaganda speeches and drilling imaginary platoons in the washroom, but, unbeknownst to his colleagues, he’s also a clandestine parcel courier for a secret organisation that recruited his services to complete their covert mission. What we thought: Die Rebellie van Lafras Verwey is quite an odd Afrikaans film, that doesn’t quite fit in with the serious Afrikaans dramas, rom-coms and slapstick comedies. Adapted from a stage play by the late famous writer Chris Barnard who wrote the Paljas screenplay, it’s a story that likes to make the audience feel uncomfortable with a man that you’re not quite sure you want to hug or admit to an insane asylum. The awkwardness of his delusions and his interactions with the people around him fails to be quirky and makes you feel like you need to escape the film. Lafras (Tobie Cronje) has been working for the government for almost 30 years, but secretly harbours an intense resentment for the established system he lives in. While working for a secret underground rebel organisation, he takes under his roof a desperate pregnant woman (Chantell Phillipus) with no one to help her. Lafras is when awkwardness meets insanity, and from the get-go he is proven to be an unreliable narrator of his own life. He is an extreme case of everyone’s dissatisfaction with their lives, the opportunities they’ve been denied and the hate for a system that only seems to benefit those already on top. Throw in paranoia and emotional instability, and you get Lafras. The audience can’t really figure out if they should be scared of him or feel sorry for him, and that seesaw makes it a hard film to watch, constantly squirming in your seat. Perhaps that was the point for the filmmakers, but you’d have to be a theater enthusiast to enjoy it. Cronje, however, does give a marvelous performance, and the film’s shortcomings mostly lies with how the main character is written and directed rather than the actor’s skills. Phillipus was a bit bland, compared to her compelling performance in, and it felt like she got steamrolled most of the time by Cronje. I have never seen the story play out on stage, but on film it felt like it was awkwardly being shoved into a box that it didn’t fit. Die Rebellie van Lafras Verwey just couldn’t make itself watchable or entertaining, and tried too hard to mimic the unique style of veteran South African directors like Katinka Heyns and Jans Rautenbach. However, I do appreciate its attempt at broadening our country’s Afrikaans cinema repertoire, but sadly we still have a long way to go before local art cinema finds it foothold in a commercially viable audience. For this one though, you’d have to grit your teeth and take one for the Afrikaans cinema team.
